WhatsApp is testing a new feature to limit the spread of spam and misinformation on the platform. The messaging app will now enforce a forwarding limit on all media, videos, photos which are shared on the platform. In India, WhatsApp will test a lower limit of five chats at once, and then remove the quick forward button next to the media file, be it audio, pictures or videos. The global limit on WhatsApp forwards will be 20 chats. Currently the limit is 250 chats. WhatsApp will also removed the quick forward button from media messages in India.

This new restriction means that if a media message is forwarded five times from the same account, then WhatsApp will disable the option for forwarding it further. However, the feature does not appear to be live for all India users yet. We found that we could forward the same media file to more than five contacts at once.

WhatsApp in a blog post revealed that India is the market where people forward more messages, photos and videos than any other country in the world. India is the app’s biggest market with over 250 million users. It is also the market where WhatsApp is facing increasing scrutiny over mob violence and lynching reports after misleading videos went viral on the platform.

The Facebook-owned messaging app in a letter to the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeITY) had written that it was horrified by the reports of violence in the country and announced new steps to curb the spread of misinformation.

BSNL has signed an agreement with the parent company of Detel S.G Corporate Mobility for selling its mobile service to the consumers bundled with Detel D1. The single-SIM feature phone gets a 1.44-inch monochrome display, and it is backed by a 650 mAh battery. Other features of Detel D1 include torch light, phonebook, FM Radio, speaker, and vibration mode.

“India is one of the only places in the world where feature phones still outsell smartphones. Such phones are preferred by a large population either due to its price or its inherent simplicity. This initiative further propels our ideology to bring communication services in the most cost-effective manner,” Yogesh Bhatia, MD, S.G. Corporate Mobility said.

WhatsApp is now back up after global outage, was down in India too

WhatsApp is now back for users after a brief outage in the afternoon of November 3. According to downdetecor.com, 46 per cent users complained of problems with the connection while 41 per cent reported issues with sending or receiving messages. About 12 per cent WhatsApp had problems with ‘Last seen’ feature of the service.WhatsApp is yet to release an official statement on the outage. Meanwhile, people took to Twitter to complain about problems with the messaging service. “First we open WhatsApp, then we open Twitter to know if#whatsappdown is for everyone,” wrote a Twitter user. “Whatsapp is down, I repeat Whatsapp is down,” tweeted out another user.Notably, this is not the first time that WhatsApp faced an outage. The Facebook-owned company was down globally early September as well, with users reporting problems accessing the app. In May, WhatsApp was down for a few hours in all parts of the world including Malaysia to Spain, Germany and some other European countries. Severely affected countries included Belgium, the Netherlands, and Britain.
